No Baloney Ride History

The origin of the No Baloney Bicycle Ride began in 1972 when the Illinois Valley Wheelm’n, formerly known as the Illinois Valley Wheelmen (1972-1989) and the Tri-County Wheelers (1971), was in its second year of existence.  During the ride’s history, it has been held under 2 different names (Pedal In and No Baloney Bicycle Ride) and held in 2 different seasons (spring and fall) with several host locations.

The first and most significant change – the ride’s name – came in 1991 and was inspired by its riders.  When current IVW member, Bill Semmens, took over as Ride Coordinator that year, he listened to prior participant feedback which stated riders were ‘fed’ up with the ride’s food option – baloney sandwiches.  Thus, the baloney sandwiches were OUT and themed specialty food stops were IN, serving German, French, and Western food to name a few!  The infamous Hawaiian food stop was always a crowd favorite with its tropical food and decorations!  Then, in the year 2000, the ride saw its next major change, moving from a spring ride to a fall ride.

The No Baloney Bicycle Ride took a one-year hiatus in 1997 when the club could not find a ride coordinator.  That year, the Tour de Chicken, organized by the Children’s Home, took place instead of the No Baloney.  Since all fees were paid in advance to Jubilee College State Park, the IVW board members voted to donate the reservation to the Children’s Home and promoted the event instead.

We hope you enjoy this year’s No Baloney Bicycle Ride, presented in the fall at its newest location – Kennel Lake Sportsmen’s Club!
