No Baloney Ride History

The No Baloney Bicycle Ride traces its roots to 1972, when the Illinois Valley Wheelm’n—now known as the Illinois Valley Wheelmen (IVW)—was in its second year as a cycling club. Over more than five decades, the ride has evolved with the cycling community. It has been known by two different names, held in both the spring and fall, and hosted from a variety of starting locations throughout Central Illinois.

One of the most memorable changes came in 1991. When IVW member Bill Semmens became Ride Coordinator, he listened to feedback from returning riders who joked they had been “fed up” with the traditional baloney sandwiches served at rest stops. The baloney sandwiches disappeared, and themed food stops became a signature part of the event. Riders enjoyed creative stops featuring German, French, Western, Hawaiian, and many other themes that became a highlight of the ride.

In 2000, the ride made another significant change by moving from its traditional spring date to the fall, where it has remained ever since.

Like many long-running events, the No Baloney Bicycle Ride has continued to adapt over the years while staying true to its purpose: bringing cyclists together for a fun, friendly, and memorable day on the roads and trails of Central Illinois.

Whether you’re joining us for the first time or returning as a longtime participant, we’re glad you’re here. Welcome to this year’s No Baloney Bicycle Ride!
